The 2001 & 2004 US Open Champion Retief Goosen is one of the best golfers of his generation and is a truly global professional, holding membership on three PGA Tours; the US PGA Tour, the European Tour and the Southern African Tour, and winning tournaments in every corner of the world.
In recognition of his 30 amateur amateur wins, and for his outstanding contribution to amateur golf, he was awarded Springbok Colours before turning professional in 1990.
Since 1995 there has not been a year when Retief hasn’t obtained a victory on one of the world’s major Tours. With the new millennium came Retief’s arrival as a truly world class player. The 2000 season saw him add the Trophee Lancome to his list of wins, and his first place in the International side in the President’s Cup cemented his standing.
2001, was Retief’s most successful year to date. In a dramatic 18 hole play-off he won the 2001 US Open by 2 shots from American Mark Brooks. Retief is one of only 5 foreign players to win the US Open since WW II; an amazing achievement. This first Major victory spurred him on to win The Scottish Open at Loch Lomond; secure a close 2nd to Sergio Garcia at the Trophee Lancome; and then win his third European Tour victory of the season at the Telefonica Open de Madrid. He and Ernie Els finished off the year in style by taking the EMC World Cup in Japan for South Africa in a play-off with Denmark. This outstanding year was concluded when he was crowned 2001 European Tour Order of Merit Champion, winning the Harry Vardon Trophy, and moving into the top 10 of the World Rankings for the first time.
Retief notched up a further three wins in 2002, the first coming at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth and his second at the Dimension Data Pro Am in South Africa. He then went on to win the Bell South Classic on the PGA Tour, before taking his second Volvo Order of Merit, and Harry Vardon Trophy at the end of the season.
At the start of 2003 he took some time out with his newborn son Leo, and his first win did not come until September at the Trophee Lancome. He secured his second victory in October on the PGA Tour at the Chrysler Championship in Tampa. It is worthy to note that only 4 other players have won in three or more consecutives seasons in the history of the PGA Tour.
He continued his run in 2004 by taking his second US Open title at the challenging Shinnecock Hills course, winning by two shots over Masters Champion Phil Mickleson. Two weeks after Retief was back in the winning circle by taking The European Open title at the K Club in Ireland. At the end of the PGA Tour season Retief won The Tour Championship by 4 shots from Tiger Woods. Retief finished 6th on the PGA Tour money list and 2nd on the European Tour Order of Merit. Retief finished the 2004 season at Sun City in South Africa where he won the Nedbank Golf Challenge by 6 shots.
In 2005 Retief has already had notched up 4 top 5 finishes and 1 top 10 finish.
Retief is now rightly counted amongst the elite multiple Major winners, and is currently lying 5th in the world rankings.
