Carnoustie, Scotland, July 18: Lam Chih Bing is counting on a specially-made one iron to keep him away from trouble at Carnoustie as he chases for a slice of British Open history.
While Lam is one of the longest hitters on the Asian Tour, the 30-year-old debutant knows he must resist taking his driver out from the bag if he hopes to become the first Singaporean to play in all four rounds at the Open.
“There’ll be very few drivers off the tee for me,” said Lam today. “I’ve got a one iron specially made by Callaway for the week and I’ve been hitting well with it. I’ve not used a one iron for a very long time but this club is really good on this course.
“It gives me just the right yardage which leaves me short of the fairway bunkers. If you’re in a bunker, it’s an automatic bogey. Hopefully, this will be my secret weapon this week.”
Lam, who qualified for the Open through the International Final Qualifying event in Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore, is also happy to have experienced bagman John Roberts by his side at Carnoustie.
Roberts has caddied on the European Tour for numerous years and worked with Simon Dyson when the Englishman won the Order of Merit in Asia back in 2000.
“John knows the golf course well and has caddied for a lot of European Tour players in the past, so hopefully our combination works out well. He’s worked out a game plan and we’ll stick with it,” he said.
By the time Lam tees off on Thursday afternoon, he would have played three full rounds at Carnoustie and he said each experience has provided a great insight to the famous Scottish links.
“We had different wind directions on most days and the golf course becomes so different. You get a good feel on what clubs that you have to hit off the tee.
“Links golf is so different and there are many options to play the course. You really need to manage yourself well.”
